James Weldon Johnson was a singularly gifted man who was born near the cusp of Juneteenth in 1871. Among all of his legendary achievements, he also wrote the lyrics for one of the most well-loved songs in all of black America, sung at celebrations, ceremonies and religious settings. Ave Reneé Dailey is a master teacher in Austin, Texas, who has given thought and words to the impact of the song.
