Indie Lens Pop Up Screening: Tell Them We Are Rising 2/15

Join KLRU and our community partners for a screening of Tell Them We Are Rising: The Story of Black Colleges and Universities by Stanley Nelson and Marco Williams. This free Indie Lens Pop Up screening takes place Feb. 15th at 6:30 pm at the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center. RSVP now

Tell Them We Are Rising explores the pivotal role historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have played over the course of 150 years in American history, culture, and identity. This film reveals the rich history of HBCUs and the power of higher education to transform lives and advance civil rights and equality in the face of injustice.

Taste of Black Austin 2/20

KLRU is a proud supporter of the Greater Austin Black Chamber of Commerce and its mission to promote the development of African American businesses in Central Texas. Join us at a Taste of Black Austin for a culinary experience that traverses the journey of black economic prosperity through the historical context of food on February 20 at the Peaches Social House. Purchase your tickets now.

The theme “From Field to Table” traces the influence of food and farming in the preservation of black history and culture.The evening will commence with an intimate reception on February 20, 2018 at Peached Social House, featuring savory hors d’oeuvres prepared by some of Austin’s favorite Black chefs and a curated photo exhibition showcasing unique food history.

Event tickets are available for $85 and community sponsor tickets are available for $150, which includes a VIP cooking demonstration preceding the reception.

Indie Lens Pop Up screening I Am Not Your Negro 1/17

Don’t miss KLRU’s screening of one of the most acclaimed films of the year, I Am Not Your Negro. This free Indie Lens Pop Up screening takes place Jan. 17th at 7 pm at the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center.

This Oscar nominee for Best Documentary envisions the book James Baldwin never finished. The result is a radical, up-to-the-minute examination of race in America, using Baldwin’s original words, spoken by Samuel L. Jackson.

Cecilia and the Broken Hearts
Cecilia + the Broken Hearts are an Afro-Chicano Futurism band formed in Austin, TX. They have been featured on NPR’s Alt-Latino and in 2016 performed at the Cactus Cafe as part of the NPR Tiny Desk Contest Tour. Their musical focus is based on traditional Latin rhythms that are layered underneath melodic three part vocal harmonies, and complemented by driving guitars, accordion, flute and synth. From Rumba to Cumbia to Conjunto, Cecilia + the Broken Hearts is working to push the boundaries of Latin music and create a perfect amalgamation. Members include Mincho Jacob (bass), Melanie Morgan (accordian, flute, vocals), Estrella De Leon (vocals), Jay Bernal (vocals, guitar, percussion), Fabian Rincon (drums), Joseph Loney (percussion), Joe Rocha (guitar, synth).

DJ Santa Smooth is a former college radio DJ and current xmas enthusiast who will be introducing shoppers to the soulful side of the holiday season.
