Anita Perry

Notes from Evan Smith

"Anita Perry is the First Lady of Texas. High school sweethearts Anita and Rick Perry, who first met at a piano recital during their elementary school years, married in 1982 after a long courtship. Anita Perry, the daughter of a physician, is a nurse by profession. She spent 17 years working in health care, as a nurse in surgery, pediatrics, and intensive care, as well as several consulting and administrative positions. Perry's commitment to health care has extended into her work as First Lady. She has acted as an advocate for various health care causes, and in 2001, two endowments were set up in her name -- The Anita Thigpen Perry Nursing Excellence Scholarship at West Texas A&M University, where Perry earned her Bachelor's degree, and The Anita Thigpen Perry Endowment at the San Antonio Health Science Center, which helps support the Center for Community-Based Health Promotion in Women and Children." - Evan Smith, Texas Monthly Talks, Broadcast 4.21.05
