Notes from Evan Smith
"Kay Bailey Hutchison was elected to the United States Senate in 1993. She is the first woman to serve as senator from Texas. Before entering politics, Senator Hutchison, a graduate of the University of Texas and the UT School of Law, worked as a political reporter in Houston. From 1972 to 1976, she was a member of the Texas House of Representatives where she most notably worked to improve Texas' rape shield laws. In 1976, she was appointed vice chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, and in 1990, she was elected Texas State Treasurer. Senator Hutchison was elected Vice Chair of the Senate Republican Conference in 2000, making her the only woman among the top five Senate Republican leaders. She is also Chair of the Surface Transportation and Merchant Marine Subcommittee, Chairman of the Military Construction Subcommittee, and member of the Defense Subcommittee of the Senate Appropriations Committee." - Evan Smith, Texas Monthly Talks, Broadcast 2.5.04
