"Rep. Pete Gallego, D-Alpine, is a member of the Texas House of Representatives from District 74, a border district that stretches from El Paso to Eagle Pass, which is the largest House district. He is the chairman of the Mexican-American Legislative Caucus and the House General Investigating Committee. He also heads the southwest Texas law office of Davis and Wilkerson, P.C. Gallego was first elected to the Texas House in 1991 and is presently serving his seventh term. In 1991, he became the first freshman Representative and the first ethnic minority ever elected chair of the House Democratic Caucus, a post he held until January of 2001. Following the 1999 session, he was named one of the state's "Ten Best" legislators by Texas Monthly. Gallego graduated from Sul Ross State University in 1982 with a bachelor's degree in political science. In 1985, he earned a law degree from The University of Texas School of Law. Gallego is a member of the Sul Ross State University Hall of Fame as an outstanding booster, and has been named a distinguished alumnus by the Sul Ross State University Ex-Student Association.
