"The only thing harder to get my mind around than a Bishop named Andy is a Bishop who podcasts - but hey, this is the 21st century. Nearly two years ago, the Right Reverend Andrew C. Doyle, as he is properly and respectfully known, was elected the ninth Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas, beating out five other contenders. In that capacity, he preaches and teaches, leading the faith's flock at a moment when religion has a great and powerful hold on our public and private lives, and when the peril and promise of the modern world have intruded on the traditional, hidebound world of the church. Yet 42-year-old Doyle sees hope and opportunity is what others might consider a job too big at a time too complicated. Born in Carbondale, Illinois, and raised in Houston, Doyle has degrees from the University of North Texas and the Virginia Theological Seminary. He was ordained deacon in 1995 and priest the following year. He served as St. Stephens Episcopal School in Austin, Christ Church in Temple, and St. Francis in College Station before joining the diocesan staff in 2003, becoming what's known as canon to the ordinary for his predecessor, Bishop Don Wimberley. In the years since, and especially in since his consecration, Doyle has worked hard to loosen his collar, as it were, attempting to connect to different and diverse followers in new ways, including by communicating with them through Facebook and Twitter.
