Texas Attorney General
Greg Abbott

Notes from Evan Smith
"This week's guest, the attorney general of Texas, is one of the rising stars of Republican politics -- which is to say, politics period, given the way things are breaking in our great state these days. And like any rising star, his name is on the lips of the genuises and futurists who speculate on who's running for what higher office in which race. Is Greg Abbott a lock for relection in 2006? Almost certainly. Will he run for governor or lieutenant governor in 2010? Is he bound for the U.S. Senate? Whatever path he chooses, the 48-year-old native of Wichita Falls is likely to encounter a favorable response from the Republican faithful, who thrill to his rock-ribbed social conservatism, as well as voters of all stripes who find his personal story to be compelling. And it is compelling. In 1984, the graduate of the University of Texas and Vanderbilt University Law School was jogging in his Houston neighborhood when he was partially paralyzed by a falling tree. In the years since, as a state district judge, a justice on the Texas Supreme Court, and, finally, since 2002, as attorney general, and as a husband, father, and energetic member of the community, his life and work have been an inspiration to all Texans." - Evan Smith, Texas Monthly Talks, Broadcast 11.17.06
