April 18, 2007: Douglas Rushkoff
As an author, teacher and documentarian, Douglas Rushkoff focuses on the ways people, cultures and institutions influence each other's values. Rushkoff will share his views on the media, technology and pop culture on Wednesday, April 18, at 7:30 p.m. at the Paramount Theatre.
As one of the leaders of the cyberpunk movement, he has written ten best-selling books including Get Back in the Box: Innovation from the Inside Out, Cyberia, Media Virus and Playing the Future.
Rushkoff has written and hosted two award-winning Frontline documentaries — “The Merchants of Cool” and “The Persuaders” — both focusing on the impact of advertising and marketing on culture. He also regularly provides commentary for NPR's All Things Considered.
He currently teaches media theory at New York University's (NYU) Interactive Telecommunications Program where he is a founder of Technorealism, which involves a continuous critical examination of how technologies might help or hinder people in the struggle to improve the quality of their lives, their communities, and their economic, social, and political structures.
