It was one of the most ambitious shipwreck searches ever undertaken: to find and film two World War II battleship wrecks, three miles beneath the sea. British battlecruiser HMS Hood and German flagship Bismarck sank over 60 years ago with the combined loss of over 3,000 men. Overcoming gales and equipment breakdowns, the search uses unique satellite technology to send back the first images of the Hood' s wreck. This one-hour program on the expedition to find the battleships is the first of two programs on the subject arising out of PBS' partnership with Channel 4 UK; in 2002, a feature-length documentary will weave the expedition together with a history of the famed battle between the Hood and the Bismarck.
