In the second episode of Britain's Outlaws, Dr. Sam Willis takes to the high seas in search of the swashbuckling pirates of the golden age of piracy in the early 18th Century. In an age of Empire, when the seas and oceans became trading routes and European settlers spread across the globe, there were rich pickings for pirates. Criminal acts of violence at sea began to play an important role in the global politics of the day as seafarers tried to control the profit from the flow of goods across the oceans: whether operating within the law as privateers, or outside the law as a pirates. Dr. Willis follows an extraordinary band of swashbucklers who included Captain William Kidd, the elusive Captain Avery, the notorious Blackbeard, and, female pirates Mary Read and Anne Bonny.
