The Namib Desert: The World's Oldest Desert

At 130 million years old, the Namib Desert stretches 1200 miles in length along the coastline with the highest dunes in the world. The desert is a strip of extreme and varying landscapes from the orange sands and vivid white salt pans of Sossusvlei to the shipwreck scattered Skeleton Coast. The Namib-Naukluft National Park extends over a large part of the Namib Desert. It's the largest game reserve in Africa and one of the largest of the world; home to desert lions and the endangered Namib elephants. Specially adapted to their arid environment, these great beasts can dig for water and even climb sand dunes on their knees. The wildlife share their desert with indigenous tribes, like the Himba. These tribes have learned to resist change and preserve their unique cultural heritage even in the face of the modern living. Together, the people and animals of the Namib traverse some of the most dramatic, arid, and austere scenery in the world.
