Fire Fighting Climate Change In Brazil

Brazil: Firefighting - When Fighting Fire Amounts To Fighting Climate Change - The Cerrado is burning - frequently and ferociously. Huge swathes of Brazil's forests and savannahs have gone up in flames. With the help of German funding, firefighter teams are doing their best with state-of-the-art technology to salvage what is left of this unique region. Every fire that's put out helps protect the environment: The Cerrado stores enormous amounts of carbon dioxide. The International Climate Initiative - a program launched by the German Environment Ministry - is supporting fire management in the afflicted regions with 8.5 million euros. Global Brains: The Illuminating Effect of Playing Football - More than 25 percent of children across the planet lack access to electricity. A much higher percentage enjoys playing football. Two students from Boston, Jessica Mathews and Julia Silverman, put two and two together and developed a football that transforms energy into light. It takes just half an hour of playing football to produce three hours of light. The plan is to have the football manufactured in countries where lack of light is an acute problem. Malaysia: Neglecting the Elderly - Malaysia's population is ageing - but care services for the aged are in short supply. In the past, the state assumed that the elderly would be looked after by their own relatives. But these days, young Malaysians put their careers and their own children first - and have increasingly little time for their parents. The Malaysian economy is booming, and today's focus is on work and wealth. But in the process, care for the elderly has fallen by the wayside. Switzerland: Tackling Melting Glaciers - The Titlis glacier mountain is under threat. The mountain is an important source of income for locals, drawing winter tourists from all over the world. So they are determined to ensure its survival. According to expert predictions, the Titlis will not survive the century. Without it, the regional tourist industry will also die out.
