We discuss two of the best new plays this season. First up, we focus on Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, Christopher Durang's madcap yet moving modernization of Chekhov. Actors Kristine Nielsen and David Hyde Pierce tell us about the background of the play, as well as experiences in their careers that led them to star in it on Broadway. Also on the program we talk about Finks, Joe Gilford's powerful look at the impact of the 1950's blacklist, now playing at The Ensemble Studio Theatre. Our guests are playwright Gilford and Fink's producer William Carden, Artistic Director of EST. They share the real life background of this drama (called "bracing" according to The New York Times) which is based on the experiences of Gilford's parents, Jack and Madeline Gilford. Both working actors, they were named as Communists by close friends (including Jerome Robbins) in front of the House Committee on Un-American Activities, and subsequently blacklisted.
