Body snatching, boiling bones, wilful ignorance and the birth of observation… In this programme, presenter Michael Mosley reveals how surgery dragged itself kicking and screaming out of the dark ages, to transform itself from butchery into a science. The early days of surgery were dark and barbaric, when the surgeon’s knife was more likely to kill than save you and invasive medicine generally met being bled by leeches to within an inch of your life. Michael goes right back to the beginning of surgical history and reveals how, against the odds, we got to where we are today.
