Social Entrepreneur: Sir Fazle Hasan Abed - Founder of BRAC - In the early 1970s, after years abroad, Fazle Hasan Abed returned home to Bangladesh, a newly-independent country. He found a nation in ruins, and he determined to help improve people's lives. "Education is the key to development, growth and prospects and opportunities for every child." GLOBAL 3000 profiles Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, founder of BRAC, the world's largest NGO. BRAC is now the world's largest NGO and focuses on helping the landless poor, particularly women. Giving Children a Second Chance in Mali - Mali is one of the poorest countries in the world and 60 percent of the population can't read or write. It's also a very young country, with around 48 percent of the population under 14. For a variety of reasons, many children miss the opportunity to attend school. The Speed Schools program - partly funded by the Norwegian Stromme Foundation - equips out-of-school children with the basic education and skills needed to pass public school entrance exams and enter the formal school system. Climate: Theory & Practice - The Earth University in Costa Rica - Costa Rica has set itself the ambitious target of becoming carbon-neutral by 2021. Much of the research required to ensure that this goal is met is being carried out at the Earth University. Here, students are exploring clean energy solutions as well as sustainable agriculture and waste management strategies. The country still has a long way to go. Protecting Tuna Stocks in the Solomon Islands - Tuna is consumed all over the world. But experts believe that certain species, such as the popular bluefin tuna - are being fished to the brink of extinction. This would be disastrous to those who depend on tuna fishing for their livelihoods. In the Solomon Islands, for example, tuna is one of the main earners. But if future generations are to continue making a living from fishing, a lot has to change.
