Clearing The Air In Mexico City

series: Global 3000

air date: 8/06/14 6:30 PM

Global Ideas: Mexico's War on Smog - In the 1990's, Mexico City was considered one of the most polluted metropolises in the world. Despite some improvements, pollution remains a significant problem, with thousands of deaths a year linked to the effects of environmental contamination. Now the Mexican government is taking action and has introduced measures to combat smog. The "Pro-Aire" program aims to rid the city of smog. Copenhagen: Europe's 2014 Green Capital - Copenhagen has been crowned European Green Capital of the Year. What's more, the Danish capital aims to become carbon neutral by 2025. That would mean creating more green areas and facilities to absorb CO2 emissions. If all goes to plan, Copenhagen may soon be described as an urban eco-topia. Ethiopia: Chinese Shoemaker Gains Foothold in Africa - Chinese shoemaker Huajian set up a factory in Ethiopia in 2012. The plant is modeled entirely on its Chinese counterpart; banners hanging on the wall display messages designed to motivate workers to produce more. Employees who work overtime earn 45 dollars a month. Critics accuse Chinese companies in Africa of engaging in a modern form of colonialism. But manufacturers describe their investment in the continent as a form of development aid. Huajian has created some 3, 500 jobs for locals. But workers find it hard to get by on their wages. About a third of Ethiopians still live in poverty. Philippines: Social Entrepreneurship Empowers Women - Mark Ruiz is a social entrepreneur who helps Filipino women set up and manage so-called "Sari-Sari" convenience stores. The small shops can be found all around the country and are often owned by women. The "Hapinoy" initiative provides support to thousands of women in the Philippines.
