Barenaked Ladies

series: Infinity Hall Live

air date: 11/13/13 3:00 AM

Barenaked Ladies brings a comically upbeat quality to alternative rock. After 25 years together, the band continues to win over fans with their witty, tongue-twisting lyrics and light-hearted style. Despite their years on the road, they still bring the same kinetic stage presence to their shows, complete with improvised raps, animated dancing and humorous banter between songs. Barenaked Ladies was born in the late 80s in the Toronto suburb of Scarborough, Canada when the duo of Ed Robertson and Steven Page began playing acoustic shows as the opening acts for comedy troupes. The experience proved influential for them as they learned the importance of inserting humor into their songs and performances. The group soon added Jim Creeggan on bass, his brother Andy on keyboards and Tyler Stewart on drums. In order to increase their visibility locally, the group began independently releasing audio cassettes, but 1991's Yellow Tape exceeded all their expectations. Fueled in part by a press story about Toronto's mayor banning their performance near City Hall since she believed their name to be demeaning of women, sales of Barenaked Ladies' Yellow Tape soared, making it the first independently released record to reach platinum status in Canada. The band's first full album, Gordon was released in 1992 with great success in Canada including the songs "If I Had a $1,000,000" and "Brian Wilson." The band caught on in America in 1998 with the chart-topping single "One Week" off the album, Stunt. When Stunt debuted at Number #3 on the Billboard 200 - selling more than 140,000 copies in its first week - BnL quickly upgraded their concert venues from small clubs to arenas. The band was nominated for two Grammys and won six Juno Awards. While Andy Creeggan and Steven Page have since left the group, the remaining members continue to tour and produce new music, including 2013's Grinning Streak. In their Infinity Hall performance, Barenaked Ladies brings the same fun and spontaneity that has endeared them to their fans. In addition to performing their mega-hits One Week and If I Had a $1,000,000, they also delight the crowd with a performance of their theme song from the hit television series, The Big Bang Theory. The audience received the rare opportunity to hear the band's first live performance of three new songs: "Boomerang," "Odds Are" and "Smile." And in true Barenaked Ladies form, the group busted out two improvised raps, one about the concert hall and the other based on an exuberant comment made by a concertgoer.
