series: Global 3000

air date: 5/08/13 6:30 PM

Mexico: Lessons in Survival - Mexico is one of the most rapidly developing nations in the world, but large swathes of the populations still live in poverty. The organization GRUPEDSAC was founded some 20 years ago by social entrepreneur Margarita Barney to benefit people in rural Mexico. The organization empowers locals by raising awareness of issues such as sustainable farming practices. Germany: Europe's Online Universities - The German start-up 'iversity. org' is hoping to become a European version of the online learning platforms that have proved so popular in the US. In future, students won't need to head to a crowded lecture hall to listen to their professors - they'll be able to do all their learning via their desktops. Ghana: E-Books For Schools - Even though elementary education is free in Ghana, there's shortage of school textbooks. In 2010, a non-profit charity called Worldreader began supplying schools with e-readers. The organization is partnered with a number of publishers who provide free content. Namibia: Climate Kick - Loving Football, Loving the Planet - Global United FC is a charity that campaigns for issues such as climate protection. Soccer stars Lutz Pfannenstiel and Fredi Bobic are among the faces of the project 'Climate Kick', which organizes frequent events in Namibia. Among the football charity's sponsors are some major Namibian companies. The non-profit organization Global United FC aims to convey an environmental message to the public at large and various schools in particular with its "Waste not Want not" educational campaign.
