Tardeadas

series: Arts In Context (klru)

air date: 9/26/13 7:30 PM

Follow a week in the life of the band Los Pinkys and learn about the importance of keeping the Tejano musical tradition alive in East Austin. The history of Austin can be told through the music of its diverse communities. The Eastside, the heart of the city’s Mexican-American community, has a long and storied tradition exemplified by its Tejano music and musicians. The Eastside is also experiencing rapid change. New bars, condominium buildings, and development projects are bringing in a new crowd into the neighborhood. This rapid change has brought in new investment to the area, but has now altered the traditional communities. Los Pinkys are a Tejano band composed of several generations of Mexican-American musicians. They play a weekly show at the White Horse, a popular Eastside bar that was once used to be a Tejano nightclub. Every Sunday, Los Pinkys play for an eclectic crowd that personifies the demographic changes of East Austin. In fact, the Sunday performance (or Tardeadas) has a long history in this community. Elderly Mexican-American couples share the dance floor with a new crowd of revelers often experiencing their first sounds of Tejano music. We follow a week in the life of Los Pinkys, as we learn about the importance of keeping the Tejano musical tradition alive in East Austin. We also explore what these new demographic changes mean to the old community, and how music can help bridge differences.
