Eastern Tennessee: Cradle Of Country Music
series: Music Voyager
air date: 4/24/13 5:30 AM
Host Jacob Edgar begins his Tennessee journey in Bristol, the city in the northeast corner of the state that proudly calls itself the birthplace of country music. He visits 96-year-old Georgia Warren, the last surviving participant of the legendary "Bristol Sessions" of 1927, which introduced the sounds of Appalachia to a wide audience. While in Bristol, he catches a street performance by musical nomads Megan Jean & the KFB and checks out Knoxville-based The Black Lillies performing at one of Bristol's many outdoor concerts. Jacob also explores the Bristol Motor Speedway, where he tests out a pace car on one of NASCAR's most exciting tracks. From Bristol, Jacob heads to Knoxville for a visit to the legendary "Blue Plate Special", a live radio program featuring the best in local music. Singer-songwriters Scott Miller and R.B. Morris show Jacob around their hometown. He also learns more about the evolution of Appalachian music through an unplugged performance by up-and-coming country stars The Roys. Finally, he passes through the revitalized city of Chattanooga, home to the New Binkley Brothers, and meets local dulcimer wizard Dan Landrum, who performs with the country rock band Yarn.
