Daniel Okrent And John Huey
series: Great Conversations
air date: 1/31/13 1:00 PM
Daniel Okrent (managing editor of Life magazine, author of Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition) and John Huey (Editor-in-chief, Time, Inc.). This lively discussion, between two journalists of long standing, explores a very curious chapter in American history: Prohibition. Last Call: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition is brimming with detailed portraits of the period's notable personalities- Sam Bronfman, H.L. Mencken, Billy Sunday. Okrent's extensive research illuminates how Prohibition gave rise to our current use of mixers with liquor, the first national crime syndicates, and the prominence of Coca-Cola. This definitive history also shows how Prohibition intersected with other elements of American history, including World War I, the advent of the income tax, the rights of women, and the question of the sanctity of individual privacy. Okrent's earlier book, Great Fortune: The Epic of Rockefeller Center, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in history. He has also written extensively on baseball, and is the inventor of Rotisserie League Baseball, the best-known form of fantasy baseball. Daniel Okrent was a featured commentator in Ken Burns' documentary "Baseball" and is featured prominently in the upcoming "Prohibition" series. John Huey became the 6th Editor-in-Chief of Time Inc. in January of 2006. In this role he oversees the editorial content of the majority of Time Inc.'s U. S. magazines, including Time, Fortune, People, Sports Illustrated, and Entertainment Weekly. He is also responsible for the editorial content of the company's websites and brand extensions.
