KLRU Brings Hip-Hop Filmmaker to Austin for African American Men and Boys and Women and Girls Conference
Austin, Texas — KLRU-TV, Austin PBS, is proud to announce that filmmaker Byron Hurt, a self-proclaimed “Hip-Hop Head,” will be the speaker for both the African American Men & Boys Conference and the parallel Women & Girls Conference on Saturday, February 17, at 10 a.m. at LBJ High School, 7309 Lazy Creek Drive, Austin. His riveting PBS documentary film, Hip Hop: Beyond Beats And Rhymes, tackles the issues of masculinity, sexism, violence and homophobia in today’s hip-hop culture. It includes revealing interviews with Mos Def, Fat Joe, Chuck D, Jadakiss and Busta Rhymes.
Hurt’s appearance in Austin is in association with KLRU’s Echoes of Color film series which is co-hosted by Hands on Central Texas (a program of the United Way), The George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center and the Austin Area Heritage Council.
His talk at the Men and Boys and the Women and Girls Conferences will be preceded by two free, public screenings of his film. Since there will not be time at the conferences to see the entire film, all who plan to attend the conference are urged to go to a free preview screening of the film:
Thursday, Feb. 15, 6 p.m.
Carver Museum & Cultural Center, 1165 Angelina St., Austin
(Seating is limited.)
Friday, Feb. 16, 7 p.m.
Reagan High School, 7104 Berkman Drive
The African American Men and Boys Conferences (AAMBC) are held monthly to teach about education and empowerment. Each conference is about African American men and boys coming together uplifting, teaching, supporting, mentoring and motivating one another. For more information on the conference contact Michael Lofton, (cell) 585-6696, mrloftontalkshow@sbcglobal.net.
The film, Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes, airs on KLRU Tuesday, February 20, at 10 p.m.
