KLRU Receives Grant from Topfer Family Foundation for Early Literacy project
KLRU-TV, Austin PBS, has received a $10,000 grant from the Topfer Family Foundation to support the station's Ready to Learn project focusing on early literacy.
Ready to Learn promotes child learning and family reading through workshops offered in collaboration with local schools and nonprofit educational organizations. KLRU has been providing this developmental resource to Central Texas since 1995. In 2005, KLRU served 879 parents and 2,392 children through 50 Ready To Learn workshops.
Each Ready to Learn workshop teaches parents how to make the home a stimulating learning environment for their pre-school age children by emphasizing the importance of reading, hands-on exercises and PBS educational programming help parents practice activities they can do with their children at home.
Previously funded by PBS and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, federal funds for the program have recently decreased and are expected to be eliminated within three years. The grant from the Austin-based Topfer Family Foundation will help offset the decrease in federal funding. The Topfer Family Foundation¹s goal is to help people connect to the tools and resources needed to build self-sufficient and fulfilling lives.
KLRU-TV, Austin PBS, reflects, celebrates and inspires Central Texas through creative excellence,
community engagement and lifelong learning. Although primarily a television station providing locally
produced and quality national programming, KLRU is also a non-profit organization helping to build a stronger
community through educational workshops, community outreach projects and public events. Get more information about
