Global Warming takes center stage as international experts, Austin Mayor Will Wynn explore the issue at Spark: KLRU’s Engaging Speaker Series presented by AMD
Austin, Texas — Austin Mayor Will Wynn will moderate a panel discussion on Global Warming featuring internationally acclaimed scientist Dr. Tim Flannery and groundbreaking journalist Elizabeth Kolbert as part of Spark: KLRU’s Engaging Speaker Series presented by AMD on Tuesday, March 20, at 7:30 p.m. at the Paramount Theatre.
Tickets are on sale now for $37 (plus service fees) through klru.org/spark or at the Paramount Theatre box office at 713 Congress Avenue. KLRU’s Spark events feature a 45-minute presentation followed by a 30-minute question-and-answer session.
Dr. Tim Flannery believes that human activity is altering the Earth's climate. His best-selling book, The Weather Makers, documents the substantial climate change and the likely ecological effects to the planet if this process continues. Formerly director of the South Australian Museum, Flannery is chairman of the South Australian Premier’s Science Council and Sustainability Roundtable; a director of the Australian Wildlife Conservancy; and the National Geographic Society’s representative in Australasia. Flannery’s other books include The Future Eaters and The Eternal Frontier, the definitive ecological histories of Australia and North America respectevly.
Elizabeth Kolbert worked with top scientists for her groundbreaking environmental series for The New Yorker. That work has been expanded for the book Field Notes from a Catastrophe, which delves into what can be done to negate the causes of global warming. Kolbert’s series on global warming, “The Climate of Man,” appeared in The New Yorker in the spring of 2005, and won the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s magazine award, as well as the 2006 National Academy of Sciences Communication Award in the newspaper/magazine category.
Spark features on event per month January through May. The series continues with:
• April 18: Media manipulation and its impact on consumers with cyberpunk author and filmmaker Douglas Rushkoff.
• May 15: Everyday life viewed through a quirky, spiritual literary truth with award-winning novelist Anne Lamott.
Over nine years, KLRU has established a reputation for bringing Austin some of the world's most talented and recognizable individuals through our Speaker Series.
