Maria Hinojosa and Ray Suarez tackle immigration, other issues at Spark: KLRU’s Engaging Speaker Series presented by AMD

Austin, Texas — After years of covering the cultural changes in the United States, two of the nation’s most respected journalists — Maria Hinojosa and Ray Suarez — will discuss topics including immigration, family and the nation’s future as part of Spark:  KLRU’s Engaging Speaker Series presented by AMD on Wednesday, February 21, at 7:30 p.m. at the Paramount Theatre.

Tickets are on sale now for $37 (plus service fees) through klru.org/spark or at the Paramount Theatre box office at 713 Congress Avenue. KLRU’s Spark events feature a 45-minute presentation followed by a 30-minute question-and-answer session.

Maria Hinojosa has been named Hispanic Business Magazine’s 100 most influential Latinos in the United States. Currently host of NPR’s Latino USA, she is also a senior correspondent for PBS’s NOW. Hinojosa is author of Crews: Gang Members Talk with Maria Hinojosa and Raising Raul: Adventures Raising Myself and My Son, a motherhood memoir about raising a Latino child in a multicultural society. In 1999, Working Mothers Magazine named Hinojosa one of the 25 “Most Influential Working Mothers.”

Ray Suarez’s work examines the economic, political and social dynamics that shape our culture. Formerly host of NPR’s Talk of the Nation, he joined PBS’s The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer in 1999. He is the author of several books including The Old Neighborhood: What We Lost in the Great Suburban Migration. His most recent book, The Holy Vote, examines the tightening relationship between religion and politics in America.

Spark features on event per month January through May. The series continues with:
• March 20: Global warming with international scientist Tim Flannery and pioneering journalist Elizabeth Kolbert.

• April 18: Media manipulation and its impact on consumers with cyberpunk author and filmmaker Douglas Rushkoff.

• May 15: Everyday life viewed through a quirky, spiritual literary truth with award-winning novelist Anne Lamott.
