KLRU Receives Grant from Silverton Foundation for Early Literacy project

KLRU-TV, Austin PBS, has received a $10,000 grant from the Silverton Foundation to support the station's Ready To Learn project focusing on early literacy.

"The Silverton Foundation is committed to supporting community projects that help people develop previously untapped capabilities in an effort to allow them to meet their own needs going forward," said Andy White, Executive Director of Silverton Foundation. “KLRU's Ready To Learn project is an important family literacy resource that empowers both children and adults.”

Ready To Learn promotes child learning and family reading through workshops offered in collaboration with local schools and nonprofit educational organizations. KLRU has been providing this developmental resource to Central Texas since 1995.

Each Ready To Learn workshop teaches parents how to make the home a stimulating learning environment for their pre-school age children by emphasizing the importance of reading, hands-on exercises and PBS educational programming help parents practice activities they can do with their children at home.

Previously funded by PBS and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, federal funds for the program have recently decreased and will be eliminated after 2008. The grant from the Austin-based Silverton Foundation will help offset the decrease in federal funding. Silverton Foundation’s goal is to empower disadvantaged people by funding initiatives in the areas of health, education, social services and economic development.
