LIVE UNITED Film Series KICKS OFF IN JANUARY
SERIES FOCUSES ON EDUCATION, FINANCIAL STABILITY AND HISPANIC ENGAGEMENT
Austin, TX -- KLRU-TV, Austin PBS, and the United Way Capital Area are pleased to announce the LIVE UNITED Film Series beginning Jan. 28, 2010. This three-part film series aims to inspire, inform and educate Central Texans about topics impacting our community: education, financial stability and Hispanic engagement. Each event combines a film screening followed by a moderated discussion with community leaders, issue experts and community representatives. Additionally, information on volunteer opportunities in Central Texas that relate to the topics presented in each film will be available.
The first event on Jan. 28 at 6 p.m. at KLRU’s Austin City Limits studio will focus on education with a presentation of the film It All Adds Up. Attendance is free and open to the public, rsvp requested at www.unitedwaycapitalarea.org.
It All Adds Up profiles the teachers and students of Wayne State University’s Math Corps, a groundbreaking organization that partners struggling middle and high school students from Detroit’s public schools with collegians, who help teach vital math and life skills the students need to succeed. After 16 years, the program’s results speak volumes: more than 90 percent of Math Corps’ students graduate from high school, and more than 80 percent attend college. The documentary features engaging and heartwarming interviews with alumni and current campers who testify to the life-changing impact of the Math Corps.
Following the screening, speakers including Dr. Michael Marder, UTeach Science Program at the University of Texas College of Natural Sciences; Clayton Christopher, Founder and CEO of Sweet Leaf Tea and a mentor with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Central Texas; and Liliana Ary, Client Services Director at Univision Radio will participate in a discussion moderated by Jason Sabo, Senior Vice President-Public Policy at the United Ways of Texas.
People who are interested in the film but unable to attend the event can watch It All Adds Up on KLRU on Sunday, Jan. 31 at 4 p.m.
Other dates in the LIVE UNITED Film Series are:
Feb. 25, 2010 – Focus on Financial Stability: Film TBA
March 25, 2010 – Focus on Hispanic Engagement: Film TBA
