KLRU programs honored with Emmy Nominations
The Lone Star Chapter of The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has honored KLRU-TV, Austin PBS, productions and programs with 12 Emmy nominations. This is the most nominations KLRU has received at one time.
KLRU produced shows Austin Now and Texas Monthly Talks received one nomination each. KLRU co-productions The Biscuit Brothers and Downtown were nominated for best series in their category. Flash Flood Alley and Texas Parks and Wildlife, which air on KLRU, were also nominated. The complete list of KLRU honors includes:
- The Biscuit Brothers was nominated in the Children/Youth category. This KLRU co-production features Allen Robertson and Jerome Schoolar as The Biscuit Brothers and teaches children about music. The series’ new season begins this October and the show airs on Saturdays at 8 a.m. and Fridays at 10 a.m. on KLRU.
- Austin Now received a nomination in the Public/Current Community Affairs Feature Segment category for Domenique Bellavia’s and Sean Cunningham’s segment on Hospice Care, a companion piece to the PBS documentary A Lion in the House on childhood cancer. Austin Now, a KLRU production, begins its new season on Sept. 29 and airs at noon and 8 p.m. Fridays.
- Downtown received two nominations for best series in the Arts/Entertainment Program category and Magazine Program category. Segments of the series were also nominated for Emmy’s including: “Arts from the Streets” in the Public/Current Community Affairs Feature/Segment category; “22 to Watch” in the Art/Entertainment Program Feature/Segment category; and “Soul of the City: Barton Springs” in the Magazine Program Feature/Segment category. Downtown, which features stories about the people and places of Austin’s downtown area, is a co-production of KLRU, the Downtown Austin Alliance and Action Figure. KLRU presents an encore broadcast of the show’s second season in October.
- Flash Flood Alley received a nomination for best Documentary. This program follows the lives of five families who rebuild after the great Central Texas flood of 1998. It was produced by Marshall Frech and distributed statewide by KLRU.
- KLRU: This Is Your Station, a promotional spot about KLRU created by Dutch Rall, received a nomination in the Promotional Image category.
- Texas Monthly Talks received a nomination in the best Interview/Discussion program category. KLRU’s Texas Monthly Talks begins its fifth season in October with special hour-long interviews with the four main gubernatorial candidates. The show airs at 7 p.m. Thursdays.
- Texas Parks and Wildlife was nominated for best Magazine Program and the show’s segment titled “How to be a Game Warden in Six Easy Months’ was nominated in the Magazine Program Feature/Segment category. Texas Parks and Wildlife is a production of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and airs Sundays at 9 a.m. on KLRU.

The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences was founded in 1957. It is dedicated to the advancement of the arts and sciences of television and the promotion of creative leadership for artistic, educational and technical achievements within the television industry. It recognizes excellence in television with the distinguished Emmy Award. The Lone Star Chapter, which is based in Dallas/Fort Worth, is dedicated to becoming the primary portal to connect professionals and students in Texas’ television broadcast-related fields for networking and career development.
