KLRU programs honored with 21 Emmy Nominations

Austin, TX -- The Lone Star Chapter of The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences has honored KLRU-TV, Austin PBS, productions and programs with 21 Emmy nominations. This is the most nominations KLRU has received at one time toping last year’s best of 12 nominations.

KLRU produced shows Austin Now, Docubloggers, Special Session and Wine Roads of Texas received nominations in various categories. KLRU co-productions The Biscuit Brothers, Downtown and State of Tomorrow were nominated for best series in their category. Texas Parks and Wildlife, which airs on KLRU, was also nominated.

The complete list of KLRU honors includes:

KLRU producer Elena Ramirez was nominated in the Public/Current/Community Affairs Feature Segment category for her story “Getting By in Austin” which aired on Austin Now.This documentary focused on the difficulty of families making minimum wage in Austin.

The Biscuit Brothers was nominated in the Children/Youth category for the “Folk Songs” episode. This KLRU co-production features Allen Robertson and Jerome Schoolar as The Biscuit Brothers and teaches children about music. The series’ new season begins this October and the show airs on Saturdays at 8 a.m. and Fridays at 11:30 a.m. on KLRU.

KLRU’s newest series Docubloggers received a nomination in the Magazine Program-Program/Special category for the series pilot episode. The series combines submitted stories from the community with KLRU-produced pieces to create a collaborative collage of Central Texas. The series will begin airing weekly this October at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays on KLRU.

Downtown received a nomination in the Magazine Program-Program/Special category. Segments of the series were also nominated for Emmys including: “Slam Poets” in the Arts/Entertainment-Program Feature/Segment category; “The Magi’s Gift’s Before He Was O. Henry” in the Texas Heritage-Program Feature/Segment category; “Hip-Hop” in the Magazine Program-Feature/Segment category; and “Experience Caring” in the Public/Current/Community Affairs-Feature/Segment category. Downtown, which features stories about the people and places of Austin’s downtown area, is a co-production of KLRU, the Downtown Austin Alliance and Action Figure. KLRU presents an encore broadcast of the show’s third season in October.

State of Tomorrow, a series about the research taking place at Texas universities, received a nomination in the Magazine Program-Program/Special category. Segments of the series were also nominated for Emmys including: “Exploring New Worlds” in the Arts/Entertainment-Program Feature/Segment category; “Skeletons in the Closet” in the Documentary-Topical category; “Disaster Response” in the Public/Current/Community Affairs-Program/Special category; and the graphics for the show’s open were nominated in the Graphic Arts-Graphics-News category. State of Tomorrow is co-produced by the UT Foundation and Alpheus Media in association with KLRU.

Special Session was nominated in the Politics/Government-News Series category. Segments of the series were also nominated for Emmys including: “The Freshman Class” in the Politics/Government-Program/Segment category; and “Reel Texas” in the Texas Heritage-News Single Story/Series category. This political series is produced in association with Midnight Films.

Texas Parks and Wildlife was nominated for best Magazine Program. Segments of the series were also nominated for Emmys including: “Texas the State of Springs” in the Documentary Topical category; “The Flying Photographers” in the Magazine Program-Feature/Segment category; “Made in Texas” in the Editor-Program category. Texas Parks and Wildlife is a production of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and airs Sundays at 9 a.m. on KLRU.

Dutch Rall was nominated in the Photographer-Program category for his work on Wine Roads of Texas. This documentary, produced by KLRU, takes an in-depth look at Texas’ wine industry.
