KLRU-TV Continues Echoes of Color – a Community Engagement Film Series
WHAT:
Free screening of the classic PBS program Frontline’s “A Class Divided.” Participants are invited to watch the film and participate in a discussion of the impact of discrimination moderated by Dr. Edmund T. Gordon, director of the University of Texas Center for African and African American Studies.
One day in 1968, a teacher in a small, all-white Iowa town, divided her third-grade class into two groups — blue-eyed children versus brown-eyed children — to give them a daring lesson in discrimination. One day the students with blue eyes received special treatment like extended recess and extra praise. The next day the brown-eyed students received the special treatment. Both groups were not allowed to interact with each other during this experiment. The riveting classic Frontline documentary “A Class Divided” shows the lasting impact on the children and its enduring power nearly 40 years later. This is the final event in a series (see below).

ABOUT THE ECHOES of COLOR FILM SERIES:
KLRU, working with community partners, created a free three-part film series called Echoes of Color to provide a forum on issues of particular concern to the African American Community. The first event took place in October 2006 with additional events in January and April 2007. Participants will watch films together and then be able to examine issues, engage in dialogue with others who share these concerns, and be given opportunities for hands-on problem solving through neighboring and volunteer activities. Continue the discussion online via the Echoes of Color blog at www.echoesofcolor.org.
