KLRU’s new community journalism series, Docubloggers, combines TV and Web
Austin, TX -- KLRU-TV, Austin PBS, presents a new television show that combines submitted stories from the community with KLRU-produced pieces to create a collaborative collage of Central Texas. Docubloggers, which begins airing weekly in October, takes a community-driven, interactive look at life in the region.
Incorporating documentary filmmaking and viewer interaction, Docubloggers takes story ideas from the community it serves to create a portrait of the area. Viewers can help in the development of this unique series by sending their story ideas to docubloggers@klru.org.
Docubloggers also goes beyond television with a blog, where anyone can post video or present a written glimpses into life from their perspective. The Web site at klru.org/docubloggers, also gives viewers the opportunity to get to know KLRU’s producers and get behind-the-scenes details on the stories they’ve created for Docubloggers.
The community journalism series will air at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays on KLRU (broadcast 18, cable 9). The first six episodes will feature stories from Taylor, Burnet and Giddings and other towns. The stories include:
October 11: Docubloggers’ pilot episode explores the world of the rodeo cowboy, introduces jazz vocalist Judy Alpert, and presents the work of photographer Michael Nye as he addresses issues of mental health. Also, a community Docublogger gives a tour of the “House of Elegance.” This episode was recently nominated for a 2007 Lone Star Emmy Award.
October 18: Take a look at your community on the grow. Docubloggers documents the use of ethanol and takes viewers out to Taylor, Williamson County’s newest boomtown.
November 1: Docubloggers features a collection of some of the festivals and gatherings from throughout the summer.
November 8: Video games have been around long enough to have their own historical archive, and it’s housed right here in our area. Docubloggers opens the doors to this history of gaming, shows the real “King of Kong,” and introduces Rivkah, the Comic Book Girl.
November 15: Central Texas is a haven for interesting and creative people from all walks of life.
Docubloggers features a piece from a community Docublogger report from Lady Bird Lake, and then take a peek at a Marble Falls priest that practices the ancient art of mosaics.
November 29: As Central Texas continues to grow, cities like Austin find solutions to their crime problems through police outreach programs. Docubloggers follows two of these programs and features a community Docublogger report about colorism.
