KLRU programs focus on Deaf Awareness Week

KLRU-TV, Austin PBS, presents special children’s programming in honor of Deaf Awareness Week, September 25 to 29.

Maya & Miguel, the popular PBS kids show about diversity, kicks off its third season with a special titled “Give Me a Little Sign.” This episode, about the friendship between a deaf child and an English as a second language learner, focuses on overcoming any type of communications challenge.

“Give Me a Little Sign” will premiere on Monday, September 25th, at 4 p.m. with open captions so that children and parents alike can experience the way the Deaf Community uses television on a daily basis.  The episode will be repeated every day that week. Maya & Miguel airs at 4 p.m. Monday to Friday on KLRU (broadcast channel 18, cable channel 9).

Throughout the year, KLRU presents Signing Time, a program that introduces children to American Sign Language.  Signing Time features Rachel Coleman, her daughter Leah (who is deaf), Alex (Leah's cousin, who can hear) and their animated pet frog Hopkins. The team teaches hundreds of ASL vocabulary-building signs that are useful in daily life.  Signing Time airs Monday to Friday at noon on KLRU2 (Time Warner channel 20) and Saturday at 1 p.m. on KLRU-G (Grande Cable channel 15).

KLRU-TV, Austin PBS, reflects, celebrates and inspires Central Texas through creative excellence,
community engagement and lifelong learning. Although primarily a television station providing locally produced and quality national programming, KLRU is also a non-profit organization helping to build a stronger community through educational workshops, community outreach projects and public events.
