The Greater East Austin Youth Association was formed in 1975 to provide recreational programming for central Texas children who had no other recourse in their lives. Some of these activities came at a cost which was initially paid for out of the pockets of the founders. What began as a football program for the youth has evolved into a year-round offering of athletic and cultural options for boys and girls.
The organization has organized into an effective nonprofit and attracts sponsors and contributers from all around the central Texas community. Perhaps the most popular effort of GEAYA is the Juneteenth Committee, which has produced the annual Juneteenth Parade through East Austin for a number of years and encouraged appreciation of black cultural heritage. This year’s educational outreach has led to the creation of a Juneteenth essay competition for grade-school children, and attractive rewards of up to $250 cash for the 1st-prize winners. This package presents the 2009 winners and the event planners.
