While fundamentalist and evangelical Christian groups have dominated recent headlines, progressive new voices have been quietly emerging from within the Christian Church. Drawing inspiration from both ancient traditions and contemporary Biblical scholarship, these new voices are calling for a Christianity that is more welcoming and one that rejects literal interpretations of the Bible. These individuals include authors, ministers, lay-leaders, professors, and theologians. Reaction to these new voices is often visceral - they are called heretics, rabble-rousers, and worse. Yet, these individuals have attracted a huge following that is hungry to practice a Christianity that isn’t tainted by reason-defying dogma.
Now, long-time KLRU Producer, Tom Spencer, has created a program that allows us to hear these voices in an hour-long television special. Emerging Voices, Emerging Church will feature reflections from some of the most famous theologians and scholars of our time: Bishop John Shelby Spong; best-selling author and scholar, Marcus Borg; Episcopal Priest and author, Barbara Brown Taylor; Franciscan Priest, Richard Rohr; Catholic Sister, author, and activist, Joan Chittister; and noted Biblical scholar and author, John Dominic Crossan.
Emerging Voices, Emerging Church presents these national leaders in an unfiltered way – allowing them to speak the truth that is in their hearts. For them, Christianity is not about what you believe, but how you live. Even those who reject religion altogether or come from another faith tradition will find their ideas refreshing.
Featuring beautiful imagery from historic Central Texas churches and tranquil music, Emerging Voices, Emerging Church will also serve as a meditative tool for those interested in exploring new ideas emerging from within Christianity in the 21st century.
