Lucky Lizard Curios and Gifts on 6th street has been an iconic pit stop for Austin visitors for many years. Located in the back is of the store is owner Steve Busti’s homage to the glory days of P.T. Barnum’s famous dime museums. In the end of the 19th century, the museums were popular forms of entertainment (and pseudo-education) for the working class and were the birthplace of the classic circus sideshow.
The Museum of the Weird is a proud testament to the weirdness that makes Austin great. Where else in the city can you find a collection of shrunken heads, or a genuine ”Fiji Mermaid?” Or maybe a two headed chicken? How about a real (Not sure) mummy from Mexico? Voted one of the top 10 tacky tourist sites by a website no one has ever heard of, the tiny back corner of Lucky Lizards has all these strange and weird things on display and more for those brave and adventurous enough to go in.
