They’re more than just hand puppets, that’s for sure. Trouble Puppet Theater Company showed me a side to puppetry that I’ve always wanted to see (more…)
I had a love affair last year with the Twilight series. And if you didn’t know, Twilight, was made into a movie. After I read the series, I developed a little obsession with vampires and read and watched anything I could get my hands on. I particularly became overwhelmed with excitement when I found out the Alamo Drafthouse was having a Vampire Prom in honor of vampire movies including the the most recent releases of Twilight and Let the Right One In. Sean and I were excited when we were told that blogger Addie Broyles of Austin 360’s Relish Austin wanted to feature one of our refrigerator’s for her column, “What’s in Your Fridge Friday?” Knowing how someone keeps up their fridge and what kind of food they like can be an interesting way to learn something new about them. Sean and I tossed a coin, and I was it! So, being the documentarian I am, I wanted to present my fridge just how it is: a bit messy. I didn’t realize how bad my freezer needed to be weeded out until I looked at the picture. It’s a lot cleaner now!
Remember the “Big Mouth Billy Bass?” You’d press a button (or trigger a proximity sensor for a surprise) and the fish would start singing either Al Green’s “Take Me To The River,” or Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.” Jeff Foxworthy once quipped that if you had more than three singing fish, “you might be a redneck.”
Texan Richard Carter took a Volvo, 5 miles of wire, five 6-volt golf cart batteries, a screw drive mechanism using 12v DC reversible motor, a lifting frame he made from scratch, a Linux server and approximately two hundred synchronized singing fish, and created what can only be described as an awesomely effective assault on good taste.
Recorded at the Austin, Texas Maker Faire.
