To Do This Week

Week of May 8th, 2010

  • Watch for aphids, since they will be more active. Many beneficial insects, including the larvae of green lacewings and lady bugs dine on them, so leave a few for them to eat. Then you'll have the beneficials around to deal with other insect pests.
  • Also check for blackspot on your roses and spray those that are prone every 7 to 10 days.
  • Prune off brown bulb foliage.
  • You can start pruning spring-flowering shrubs and roses.
  • Trim back asters and other perennials that have flushed out, to keep them compact and reduce sprawling as time goes on.
  • Fertilize the lawn and flower beds.
  • Remember to keep your trees watered if rain continues to elude us. It's especially important to watch the moisture level on shrubs and trees you planted this spring. Water slow & deep, not just a top sprinkling. Then let them dry out. You don't want to overwater them, either.
