To Do This Week

Week of May 15th, 2010

  • Fertilize the lawn. Actually your plants had enough stored energy or turf from the winter to leaf out for you, and this is a great time to go out and fertilize them for the first time. You do need to encourage the growth right now to choke out those weeds that you might have had invade us over the summer.
  • Mulch.
  • Continue planting warm-seasonal annuals (including from seed).
  • Continue planting herbs and perennials.
  • Fertilize perennial beds.
  • Spray Bt (Bacillus thurigiensis) if caterpillars are destroying your plants. Remember, Bt will also harm your butterfly larvae too, so target only specific plants.
  • Deadhead spring flowering plants.
  • Remember to water your new shrubs and trees. Give them deep soakings until it’s wet at least 2-3" down.
