Question of the week

<%=tDate%>

Q. When can I apply a weed and feed product?

A.  Never! The producer has seen many gardens where trees and perennials were killed or severely damaged with this type of mixture. Applying fertilizer now only feeds the weeds. At this time of year, the best thing to do is to dig them out. In hot weather, apply 20 percent vinegar directly to the weed. In mid-September, apply corn glutin, a natural pre-emergent.

Plant of the week

One of the first landscape plants to steal the show in spring is Carolina jessamine. It bursts forth with a barrage of yellow trumpet shaped blooms. This evergreen vine is well suited to a trellis or garden wall, and can also be massed and trimmed into a mounding groundcover/shrub. It does well in full sun to part shade. Note that the blooms and foliage are poisonous, so it is not for homescapes with very small children.

Planting tips of the week
  • Continue planting, but hold off on warm weather annuals a few more weeks. Resist those periwinkles until May!
  • If you couldn’t wait to plant the tomatoes and peppers, keep row cover or blankets handy. Some gardeners keep row cover on through spring to protect against insects and wind.
