Is it safe to use water from a water softener on houseplants?

This water is salty, so you're right to be concerned about it. It can damage your plants as all salty water can. What you need to do is leach the salt from the soil on a regular basis. And by that, I don't mean to water the plant more often, but when you do water your plant, you need to use more water. Take your plant to the sink or the bathtub and thoroughly soak the soil to leach out the salts. Then let the plant drain. Don't overwater the plant; let it dry out before you water it again.

If you know that your plant is salt sensitive, or want to err on the side of caution, leaching at every watering would be best.  For most plants though, maybe leach once every few months, and at a minimum, for plants that aren't particularly sensitive, I would say twice a year.
