Garden of the Week

John Wilson

John Wilson and Debra Leff don't spend time behind a lawnmower these days. In his own front yard, John wanted to exemplify the resourceful lessons he teaches his biology students at St. Stephen's Episcopal School, including the tough-plant lessons theyd learned on expeditions to the Davis Mountains and Big Bend.

Now, instead of struggling grass, agaves, cacti, yuccas and flowering perennials invite an expedition of discovery, right at home. The gardens living room design encourages companionable visits with the neighbors, who stop for a look at the plants and the front entry pond. Then they follow the stained concrete pavers to sit and talk awhile.

This City of Austin Green Garden is also resourceful, with minimal water use and no pesticides.
