Tips of the Week
-
Prepare your soil for new ornamental and vegetable beds with well-composted organic material. Add 1-3" and blend into your existing soil
-
Prune and fertilize roses.
-
Cut back mushy growth from frozen plants but do not prune cycads, abutilons, or others that browned with the extreme cold.
-
If you need to move a plant, do it now, except for cold tender plants.
-
Do not prune damaged citrus. Wait until the last freeze date.
-
Stay on top of those weeds! Do not apply a weed and feed type of product. It is too early to fertilize the grass and the herbicides in these products cause great harm to our plants and our waterways.
-
Continue planting trees, shrubs, roses and hardy perennials.
-
Check this list for the many vegetables that we can plant now.
-
Plant herbs like basil, thyme, oregano, lemon balm, lemon verbena, and rosemary. These work well even in containers.
-
Weed!! If you let the weeds go to seed, you'll have them next year. Avoid chemicals since they will do no good right now. The best thing is a shovel or other tool. And, keep them mowed.
