At EAST 2012, artists & studios often share the same building to help them inspire & create. The building at 507 Calles Street in Austin serves as one of those spaces. Here meet artists from the East Side Glass Studio creating glass sculptures & providing lessons to public on glassblowing. At Sky Candy, we see artists glide down silk sashes & share their passion for aerial performances. One building, many forms of creation.

Beyond the humble entrance for the Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum lies an outdoor artistic experience for all your senses. What started as an amazing gift of land and artwork from Charles and Angeline Umlauf, this property has become a destination for nature and art lovers with both figurative and abstract pieces of sculpture. Activities fill the calendar of the garden & museum year round and many an Austin bride hope to say “I do” at this special place.

In this ever adapting digital world, technology and its hardware can quickly become antiquated. What happens to these digital artifacts when they can no longer be used for their originial purposes? Leticia Bajuyo has one answer – Art. For her installation Event Horizon, Bajuyo strung together thousands of donated, cast-off CDs to create two grandiose whirlpools pulling you down into the event horizon. But it doesn’t stop there, each vortex comes out the other side as a huge victrola horn ending with a theramin to create sounds pushing out and being pulled in on both sides. The salvaged, glistening discs not only reflect the viewer’s image, but also the memories shared of this almost forgotten medium. Event Horizon is site-specific to Women and Their Work gallery and is free and open to the public through August 30, 2012.

In September 2011, the most destructive wildfire in Texas history raged through Bastrop County, TX. The Bastrop County Complex Fire destroyed 1,667 homes, burned 33,033 acres and claimed two lives. This blaze devastated the region’s signature Loblolly pine population and further compromised the habitat of the endangered Houston Toad. ART from the ashes takes its mission to Texas to support the Lost Pines Recovery Team’s restoration efforts for the Lost Pines Region of Bastrop County, TX. The exhibition from April 28 – May 5, 2012 showcased over 70 works of art donated by Texas based artists and ART from the ashes. In AFTA’s spirit of “Support. Inspire. Create. Renew,” works featured will incorporate materials salvaged from fire site locations in Bastrop County. Proceeds support the efforts of the Lost Pines Recovery Team.

Spiral Plexus will be on exhibit March 11 – June 9, 2012.

Art On The Way (AOTW) is an innovative nonprofit organization committed to transforming public and private underutilized plots of land throughout Austin into sites for contemporary visual art. AOTW reclaims this land and invigorates these city-sites by installing a series of unique public artworks created by Texas artists directly for these forgotten portions of Austin neighborhoods. AOTW believes that art enriches lives, and that this enrichment should be available to everyone. Art should be everywhere: On your way to school, on your way to work, on your way home– Art On The Way!

Scott Saunders believes the way we internalize input from our senses and create a coherent individual reality is a complex and mysterious process. Our ability to know things about the world is limited, and our concept of the world reflects this in generalizations and contradictions. Saunders’ artwork is an exploration of these imperfect living models of reality and of our lives within them.

John Barkley’s mission is to explore the limits of sculpture in clay, and make available unique, expressive hand made pieces for anybody he can reach. He was born in Austin back in the ’70s and has been living here most of his life. John fell in love with clay at a very early age and has had his hands it it ever since. These days he works almost exclusively in fired earthenware. Color, and lots of it, continues to be a major feature of his work.
