At EAST 2012, artists & studios often share the same building to help them inspire & create. The building at 507 Calles Street in Austin serves as one of those spaces. Here meet artists from the East Side Glass Studio creating glass sculptures & providing lessons to public on glassblowing. At Sky Candy, we see artists glide down silk sashes & share their passion for aerial performances. One building, many forms of creation.

Once a year, Samba schools flood the streets of Rio de Janeiro with heart-pounding music and dazzling costumes. Fortunately, Austinites don’t need a vacation to experience the pure joy of Brazilian culture since we have the Austin Samba School. This group of over 100 volunteers, from all walks of life, spreads the alegria of authentic Brazilian drumming and dance to our community. The Austin Samba School holds free classes once a week, and the intense practice pays off when they perform a large-scale, themed production at Austin’s own Carnival Brasileiro.

S.F. Austin High School’s Ballet Folklórico is a for-credit dance program in Austin, TX. While it may be just a class to some students, this dance program allows its participants to grow academically and socially through collaboration and leadership opportunities. These students proudly represent their art, culture and school in dozens of performances throughout the community each year.

Forklift Danceworks – The Trash Project

Directed by choreographer Allison Orr with an original score by Graham Reynolds, The Trash Project is a unique partnership between Forklift Danceworks and the City of Austin Solid Waste Services, featuring 24 employees and 16 large sanitation vehicles. Explains SWS Director Bob Gedert about the 2009 premier, “The Trash Project showcased our employees in a way that had never been done before. “[It] helped boost employee pride and morale and garnered lots of positive media attention for the department.” Austin City Council Member Laura Morrison says, “The Trash Project is one of the most unique and inspirational productions I have seen. Allison Orr, with Forklift Danceworks, produced a creative ballet on a grand scale that introduced the audience to the real beauty in the work of our Solid Waste Services employees.” – forkliftdanceworks.org
