South Asian New Year Festival
Pohela Boishakh, the South Asian New Year Festival, was introduced in North India over 400 years ago by the Mogul Emperor Akbar. This year’s celebration, according to the South Asian calendar, ushers in the year 1418.
On April 9, 2011, the South Asians in Central Texas showcase the historically rich, colorful culture of South Asian countries by hosting this free event at the Zilker Hillside Theater. Traditional home made South Asian foods, ethnic dress, indigenous arts and crafts, and open air performances of South Asian music and dance are featured at this celebration.
