In this ever adapting digital world, technology and its hardware can quickly become antiquated. What happens to these digital artifacts when they can no longer be used for their originial purposes? Leticia Bajuyo has one answer – Art. For her installation Event Horizon, Bajuyo strung together thousands of donated, cast-off CDs to create two grandiose whirlpools pulling you down into the event horizon. But it doesn’t stop there, each vortex comes out the other side as a huge victrola horn ending with a theramin to create sounds pushing out and being pulled in on both sides. The salvaged, glistening discs not only reflect the viewer’s image, but also the memories shared of this almost forgotten medium. Event Horizon is site-specific to Women and Their Work gallery and is free and open to the public through August 30, 2012.
