Design Squad Contest Seeks Kids’ Recyclable Ideas

PBS’ engineering competition series Design Squad is offering kids a chance to get in on the action. The 2010 Trash to Treasure Competition challenges kids ages 5 to 19 to take everyday discarded or recycled materials and re-engineer them into functional products. Three winners will win a trip to Boston to see their designs built and will appear on the TV show and Web site. 25 finalists will also be featured on the Web site. SUPER WHY and the Beach Day Mystery takes our superheroes on a swashbuckling scavenger hunt, complete with clues, pirates and buried treasure.

X marks the spot! Whyatt and the other fairytale buddies have found a clue leading to treasure and they need a little help! So the superhero readers fly into The Beach Day Mystery where they set off on a swashbuckling scavenger hunt adventure filled with clues, pirates, and of course, treasure! Will Super Why and his friends be able to outsmart the trickiest pirate of them all?

Educational Objectives: To learn how to figure out clues. Kids will follow the alphabet, rhyme with AIL words, and use the power to read to change the story!

PBS announced today a multi-year initiative to recognize innovative preK-12 educators and instructional practices that inspire and engage students in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The effort was acknowledged at an event at the White House today marking the second phase of President Obama’s “Educate to Innovate” campaign that recognizes excellence in teaching.

With its member stations, PBS is launching the annual PBS Teachers® Innovation Challenge (pbs.org/teachers/innovators/) later this month to honor and celebrate talented teachers, and showcase best practices in support of the growth and advancement of the teaching profession. NSTA is supporting the Challenge by encouraging participation of science teachers at every level of school and will recognize innovative STEM educators among the 50 Challenge winners that will be announced this spring.
