Austin is the live music capital of the world, and for 37 years KLRU has contributed to that reputation with Austin City Limits. But increasingly, our city is gaining a reputation as an important center for the film world. That’s why starting in April, KLRU-Q will launch Saturday Night at the Movies, a full-length feature film every Saturday night, plus extra content that gives the evening an Austin spin. On KLRU-Q you’ll be able to watch your favorite movies like When Harry Met Sally, Thelma and Louise, Once, Unforgiven and Dr. Zhivago.
Saturday Night at the Movies will explore the work of legendary actors and actresses through many important films from their careers. From Marilyn Monroe in Bus Stop and Audrey Hepburn in The Nun’s Story to Sigourney Weaver in Aliens and Paul Newman in Cool Hand Luke, viewers will have the chance to enjoy an exciting array of noteworthy performances.
We’re excited about this and other programming changes coming to KLRU-Q this year, but those changes depend on your support. Your support throughout the year allows KLRU to reach beyond PBS to bring you exciting new Q program offerings like Saturday Night at the Movies, The Aviators, Wood Songs and Life on Mars.
Perhaps you value the fact that KLRU offers you a front row seat to arts and cultural programs at home and around the world, like Great Performances, Masterpiece, or locally created arts programs like Austin City Limits, InContext, and KLRU Collective.
Or you appreciate that KLRU and PBS are America’s largest classroom, providing educational media that helps prepare children for success in school and opens up the world to them in an age-appropriate way.
KLRU also strives to treat you as a citizen, not a customer, with news programs you depend on, like PBS Newshour, Frontline, Washington Week, and Overheard with Evan Smith. In fact, the Roper Poll declares PBS #1 in public trust, and TV’s most trusted news source, year after year. And beginning tonight, you can double your support for KLRU public affairs programming because every gift will be matched by a generous grant from the BNSF Foundation.
There are many reasons you value KLRU-TV, Austin’s PBS, and your support during our March fundraising drive is what’s truly important – Give today and help us reach our pledge goal of $240,000 in the next 17 days.
PS. You asked, we listened! KLRU has decided to reduce pledge by 7 days in March. Show your support for uninterrupted programs by giving a gift now.
KLRU has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the BNSF Foundation – and the timing couldn’t be better. They have agreed to match $5,000 in viewer contributions during this pledge drive, which runs through March 20th. BNSF has a strong interest in supporting public affairs programming, which is why you’ll be hearing about this exciting partnership during episodes of NewsHour, Washington Week, Need to Know and Overheard with Evan Smith. We hope you’ll show your support so that, together, we can leverage BNSF’s generosity to support our station.
We take pride in providing Central Texas with a front-row seat to great arts and cultural programs, that you’ll only find on KLRU. We are extra excited to be able to bring you the LES MISÉRABLES 25TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT AT THE O2, which will be seen on KLRU for the first time on Sunday, March 6, 2011, 6:00-10:00 p.m.
No one could have guessed on October 8, 1985, when Les Misérables opened in London at the Barbican Theatre that it would become a worldwide phenomenon, but audiences embraced it from the start, creating a “people’s musical” that has played in 42 countries and has been seen by nearly 60 million people. In 2010, the legendary musical celebrated its 25th birthday, and to mark the occasion, producer Cameron Mackintosh staged an extraordinary concert at the O2 Arena in London.

Les Miserables 25th Anniversary Concert Sunday, March 6, at 6 pm Featuring members of the original cast and hundreds of other actors and musicians, the legendary musical celebrates 25 years of production. Support this and other arts programs now.
The MFI Foundation has just awarded KLRU a generous $25,000 grant in support of Overheard with Evan Smith. We are very excited to continue a partnership with MFI and are grateful for their ongoing enthusiasm for this locally-produced public affairs program. Together, we are bringing intelligent and engaging conversations into the lives of viewers residing in Central Texas and beyond!
We need your help ending the fundraising drive early this March. Each year, KLRU provides you with thousands of hours of uninterrupted programming, and this March we’ve committed to end our fundraising drive as soon as we reach our goal. Your financial support directly funds high-quality PBS programs and events and outreach activities that inform, educate and entertain everyone in our community.
