KLRU and Alamo Drafthouse “Sid the Science Kid Movie” Premiere!

  • Walk the red carpet and take photos in our photo booth.
  • Meet Clifford the Big Red Dog.
  • Enjoy hands-on science activities in the lobby with the KLRU-TV, Austin PBS education team.
  • If you are not already, now’s your chance to become a KLRU Explorers family!

Community Screening: Arts In Context 8/7

Join KLRU and the Austin Public Library for free screenings on the first Tuesday of the month at the Windsor Park Branch Library (5833 Westminster Dr). Screenings will start at 7 p.m. with a discussion to follow each of the films. The next screening will be Arts In Context: Producing Light on August 7th. These events are free and open to the public. The filmmaker will be in attendance at this screening.

Arts In Context spends a month with Ballet Austin, as Artistic Director Stephen Mills and company produce a re-staging of the acclaimed Light/ Holocaust and Humanity Project. With unprecedented access to the dancers and staff on and off the stage, Producer/ Director Karen Bernstein and Cinematographer Deborah Lewis provide a unique look into production for Mills’ harrowing work on survival amidst a climate of indifference and hate.

Screening: Operation Appreciation 7/3

Join KLRU and the Austin Public Library for free screenings on the first Tuesday of the month at the Windsor Park Branch Library (5833 Westminster Dr). Screenings will start at 7 p.m. with a discussion to follow each of the films. The next screening will be Operation Appreciation on July 3rd. These events are free and open to the public. The filmmaker will be in attendance at this screening.

Each week, retirees from Georgetown, TX, give heartfelt thank yous to soldiers reporting for duty at Fort Hood as well as those injured in combat. This documentary, accentuated by stunning imagery of America s largest military base, follows the volunteers as they collect cookies, brownies and doughnuts from local stores, and baked goods made by people in the community to distribute at the Army base. The retirees travel more than 50 miles with cars filled to the brim with treats to hand the treats to hundreds of soldiers getting processed at Fort Hood every Thursday. Not only do these volunteers walk the lines giving treats and saying thanks to the incoming troops, but they also bring food to the Wounded Warriors buildings, where severely injured soldiers are recovering, and to the Fisher House, which gives a home to military families to be close to a loved one during hospitalization. Many of the volunteers are veterans themselves, and have incredible stories of their own survival in war. Their reasons for giving back are both moving and remarkable. Along the way, the viewers will also hear from the troops that receive the treats, and find out how the kindness of strangers affects them.

Operation Appreciation airs on Thursday, July 5th at 8 pm and Sunday, July 8th at 9:30 pm

The Atomic Duo will kick off the evening with live music on stage while Rudy’s Country Store and BBQ whips up tasty sandwiches and Live Oak pours their finest brews. Host Chet Garner will be in attendance with special guests from the episode: Former Bastrop County Judge Ronnie McDonald, Bastrop Fire Chief Perry and Asst. Chief Stradling.

In the Life “Becoming Me”
Is it a boy or a girl? Many parents learn the answer before their baby is born, and most expect their children to develop a gender identity that mirrors biological sex within their first few years. But for transgender and gender nonconforming children, gender identity unfolds throughout childhood, adolescence and into early adulthood. Eight families with transgender and gender non-conforming children ranging in ages from 5 to 25 share their stories. With the healthy development of their children at stake, parents must confront binary perceptions of gender, widespread transphobia and controversial parenting decisions.

Art 21 preview screening at UT

On March 28 from 4-5pm in Doty Fine Arts Building (DFA map) room 2.204, the Fine Arts Library will host a preview screening of Art 21 Season 6. The event will feature a screening of the episode called Change focusing on artists Ai Weiwei, El Anatsui, and Catherine Opie. Art 21′s new season begins airing soon on KLRU.

Preview Screening: Downton Abbey 1/5

Join KLRU and other Downton Abbey fans as we preview the first hour of the second season of this beloved Masterpiece Classic series.

The screening will be January 5th in KLRU’s Studio 6A. Doors open at 6:30 and the screening will start promptly at 7. The event is free, but an RSVP is required. RSVP now

Downton Abbey season two starts airing on January 8th on PBS, but we’re giving our fans a chance to see the first hour before anyone else. We’ll have Downton Abbey items to give away and light refreshments will be served. RSVP now

POV "Better This World" Screening 8/24

Monkey Wrench Books, 110 E. North Loop, will host a screening of the POV documentary “Better This World” on Wednesday, 8/24, at 8 pm. This film will air on KLRU Tuesday, 9/6, at 9 pm

The story of Bradley Crowder and David McKay, who were accused of intending to firebomb the 2008 Republican National Convention, is a dramatic tale of idealism, loyalty, crime and betrayal. Better This World follows the radicalization of these boyhood friends from Midland, Texas, under the tutelage of revolutionary activist Brandon Darby. The results: eight homemade bombs, multiple domestic terrorism charges and a high-stakes entrapment defense hinging on the actions of a controversial FBI informant. Better This World goes to the heart of the war on terror and its impact on civil liberties and political dissent in post-9/11 America.
