Brian Helgeland, the creative force behind 42, LA CONFIDENTIAL, MYSTIC RIVER, and A KNIGHT’S TALE, shares his experience as a screenwriter, director and producer, along with the ups, downs and left turns of the filmmaking industry. Accompanied by the short film HECTOR IS GONNA KILL NATE, from Ari Issler about a basketball student that rolls into his High School gym looking for revenge.

Hollywood Stars Film Package Rocky at 8 pm
A small time boxer (Sylvester Stallone) gets a once in a lifetime chance to fight the heavyweight champ in a bout in which he strives to go the distance for his self-respect.

Boxing Gym at 10:00 pm
This film explores an Austin, Texas institution, Lord’s Gym, which was founded by Richard Lord, a former professional boxer. A wide variety of people of all ages, races, ethnicities and social classes train at the gym: men, women, children, doctors, lawyers, judges, business men and women, immigrants, professional boxers and people who want to become professional boxers alongside amateurs who love the sport and teenagers who are trying to develop strength and assertiveness. The gym is an example of the American “melting pot” where people meet, talk, and train.

Just Seen It Episode #504 at 7 pm
On the next episode of Just Seen It, we review the animated comedy, THE LEGO MOVIE, and then head back to TV for a review of the new NBC dramedy, ABOUT A BOY. Next, we discuss TIM’S VERMEER, the fascinating documentary about the “photo-realistic” paintings of Johannes Vermeer, and finish up with the war drama, THE MONUMENTS MEN, featuring an all-star cast led by George Clooney.

Frozen North: Sir Hubert’s Forgotten Submarine Expedition at 9:35 pm
Sir Hubert Wilkins was a fascinating character with many diverse interests. He was a war correspondent and photographer, polar explorer, naturalist, geographer, climatologist and aviator. After completing the world’s first trans-arctic flight in 1928, Wilkins’ dreams of exploration grew. He renovated a WWI submarine, enlisted a crew of 20, and planned to make headlines with a daring expedition. The ship was christened “Nautilus,” made famous by Jules Verne’s novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. In the riveting documentary FROZEN NORTH: SIR HUBERT’S FORGOTTEN SUBMARINE MISSION oceanographer Hans Fricke searches for the wreck of Nautilus. With a wealth of historical footage, modern re-enactments, and the help of a 1:1 steel model of the sub, one of the last polar adventures of our time is brought back to life.

Bayou: DC’s Killer Joint at 10:30 pm
The Bayou: DC’s Killer Joint chronicles the 45-year history of a Washington, D.C., landmark and takes viewers on a journey from Dixieland to Dave Matthews, from strippers and bikers to hippies and punks. The kind of neighborhood club that’s all but vanished from the American scene, The Bayou featured jazz legends Coleman Hawkins, Woody Herman and Count Basie in the 1950s; rock ‘n roll and student riots in the ’60s; the debuts of Kiss, the Runaways, Dire Straits, Foreigner and U2 in the ’70s and ’80s; and the last-ever performance by international sensation Eva Cassidy in the ’90s. Told by Bayou performers, employees and patrons, this film celebrates the club’s music, mischief and enduring legacy.

Just Scene It at 7 pm
On our last episode of our fourth season, we offer up a special encore performance of three indie movies from 2013 that were among our favorites and deserves a second look: the coming of age drama, THE SPECTACULAR NOW, based on true events, the drama FRUITVALE STATION, and the summer comedy, THE WAY WAY BACK. And we top off the show with an interview with academy award winning director, BARBARA KOPPLE, about her newest documentary on the Hemingway family – RUNNING FROM CRAZY. And stay tuned for our next season where we kick off our reviews of the mid-season TV pilots.

“Will Ferrell: The Mark Twain Prize” celebrates the work of the popular comedian and comic actor. From the stage at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, Ferrell’s friends, contemporaries and co-stars salute him, from Christina Applegate, Jack Black and Zach Galifianakis, to Conan O’Brien, Maya Rudolph and Molly Shannon. With music from Green Day.

You Don’t Know Jack Soo at 11:3- pm
This program tells the story of a pioneering American entertainer, Jack Soo, an Oakland native who became the first Asian American to be cast in the lead role in a regular television series, “Valentine’s Day” (1963), and later starred in the popular comedy show “Barney Miller” (1975-1978). Featuring rare footage and interviews with Soo’s co-stars and friends, including actors George Takei, Nancy Kwan and Max Gail, comedians Steve Landesberg and Gary Austin, and producer Hal Kanter, the film traces Soo’s early beginnings as a nightclub singer and comedian, to his breakthrough role as Sammy Fong in Rogers and Hammerstein’s Broadway play and film version of “The Flower Drum Song”. The film also explores why Soo, a former internee who was actually born Goro Suzuki, was forced to change his name in the post WWII era, in order to perform in clubs in the midwest. Because of his experiences, throughout his career in films and television, Soo refused to play roles that were demeaning to Asian Americans and often spoke out against negative ethnic portrayals.
